A Shift in the Life of a Co-op Member

Most summertime Saturday mornings you will find me at the Farmer’s Market, watching the baby parade and perusing the local veggies, praying for Brussels sprouts.  The colder months leave an empty space in my weekend routine, so I was more than willing to volunteer for my first shift on a Saturday morning in December.

I started by signing into the till, preparing for the rush of Co-op members I hoped would be in that day.   I had told a few of my member-friends that I would be working, and I was ready to test my old grocery-checking skills. Accurately rung groceries, here I come!   My first friend-customers arrived, baby stroller in tow.  They perused the inventory as we chatted, stocking up on local items and Kombucha.  I rang them up, helped them bag and they were on their way.  My next task was to get the floors cleaned up.  I swept then mopped the front room and the back room with the sinks.  When I finished, everything was clean and smelling of orange.

The next customers were also friends, and their visit was similar.  They picked out local food and the ever-popular Kombucha.  We discussed what we were doing that evening as I rang them up.  It was great to see them and was fun to be behind the counter, interacting in different roles than we were all used to.  The remainder of my shift was spent making signs for some of the new frozen products we were to receive that afternoon.  I thought the fact that I got a sneak peek at the new inventory was first-rate, and the sign making satisfied my Sharpie-use addiction.   Once again the Co-op was providing an opportunity for mutual benefit!  The next “shiftie” arrived shortly thereafter.  I counted out of my till and signed off on the deposit as more members came in to shop.  My work was complete for the day.

This summer you will find me at the Co-op on Saturday mornings, whether volunteering or shopping, as I find the same sense of community here that I find at the Farmer’s Market.  I may be “working” as I volunteer, but it is a refreshing change from my weekday “desk jockey” job.  I love that I can see friends, pick up some of my own groceries, support local growers and producers, and do good for Missoula, all in the same place.

Warehouse Folk

Amy

December 8, 2007, showed Missoula what the Missoula Community Co-op is all about.  In a combined effort of volunteers, community, and music, Amy Martin showcased a set of new acoustic songs and marked the first public event in the Co-op’s warehouse space.

With special guests, Emi Kodama and Rachel Tillman, Amy christened the new space with humor, good music, and community spirit.  Special treats donated by Co-op members and extra blankets kept people warm and the response was very positive.  It is estimated that about 60-70 people attended and it was a nice mix of Co-op members and the general public.

Not only was the event itself a success but the volunteer effort was truly astounding.  Members of the Outreach and Facilities groups came together to create a unique community space and an event that went off without a hitch.  Personally, I was amazed at the overall positive attitude and how much everyone pitched in.  In addition, Amy wanted to extend one more “thank you” to the Co-op and everyone involved for their support and help.

Thank you to everyone who helped, organized, baked, donated, built, and came to the show.  We couldn’t have done it without you.  And for the next show?  I think we might be ready for John Prine.  If you have any suggestions or ideas for future community events or performances, please contact the Outreach committee.
